Online job databases have truly revolutionized job searching. No longer do you have to wonder where you might go to locate job leads; now, the question is how do you possibly know which database to go to? After all, at last count, well over 1,300 employment sites were on the Web — and that's a conservative estimate. Where is a person to start looking? Frankly, start here!
- Flipdog: If you click on the State of Montana, it brings up about 500 jobs and nationwide 240,000 jobs, you can search by category there.

The Big Six
The following databases, listed alphabetically, are so big, so popular, and so filled with jobs that they stand out as the most prominent denizens of employment cyberspace, receiving anywhere from 300,000 to 3 million unique visitors each month, according to statistics gathered by Media Metrix:
- Job Banks: The best site for finding state and government jobs of all varieties, this class act links to more than one million jobs to boot.
- CareerBuilder:The most technically innovative site among the top ten, this site was the first to make use of parallel, or multiple site, search technology for job seekers. In addition to a large range of general jobs, it has the Mega Job Search, which is a real boon to job seekers as it searches about 30 job databases simultaneously.CareerBuilder is also a good national job site to use when you're relocating. New grads say they find it very useful for their needs and skill levels.
- HotJobs: Experiencing explosive growth that has pushed it among the larger sites on the Web, HotJobs is heavy on technical jobs, but also has plenty of excellent general jobs with top companies.
- Jobs.com: This well-trafficked site hinges its efforts on making regional connections for job seekers.
- Monster.com:The result of the combined databases of the former Online Career Center and the Monster Board, this is one of the most highly trafficked sites and, as such, is an important place to check when you begin a job search.
- NationJob Network: An excellent site for high-tech professionals and also good for general job searching, this site has a very extensive job-search agent and a network of highly specialized sites for key professions. The site uses very good search technology to help job seekers refine searches and get targeted results.
The next tier
Even though the Big Six are terrific sites, you can't content yourself with visiting only them if you want to spread your net as efficiently and capably as possible. These databases aren't quite as big or as famous as the Big Six, but the quality of jobs that you can find is terrific.
- The Black Collegian: This impressive site is an all-time favorite with focused content for African-Americans, but it is open to all searching for a job.
- CareerMagazine: Career Magazine is a particularly good database for college students to work with in their job search.
- Net-Temps: This site offers many high-quality job opportunities for temporary workers.
- CampusCareerCenter: This is one of the few spots that college students and new grads can visit to find internships.
- Recruiters Online Network: RON boasts one of the larger job databases on the Web. Although the site is geared to recruiters, it's a terrific site for job seekers, too. Also on this site you can use a tool that helps you look for recruiters.
Fabulous specialty or "niche" employment sites
Niche employment sites are the places you want to go when you know exactly what kind of job you want. Niche sites exist for nearly every profession. Although niche sites tend to have fewer jobs overall, the jobs are typically a better fit for you if you work in the particular profession that the site covers.

Don't get tricked into paying money to look at jobs or post resumes! Be especially alert for co-branding deals, in which the employment site has an agreement with another job database. Because the databases share resumes, jobs, and other data, you may lose your privacy. |
The following are some real standout specialty sites:
- Adweek Online: This site for advertising execs is unusual in that it isn't loaded with advertising hype but rather includes high-quality jobs in a field that's not the easiest profession to find a job in.
- Cool Works: The "cool" in this unusual site title refers to the breezes you feel if you take a job that you find here; the Cool Works site lists jobs for people who want to work in the great outdoors.
