  Newsletter from Montana - Minnesota

September 2011

We are planning to rent out our little house here in Red Lodge - fully furnished - for $ 1,200 a month. Send me an email if you are interested. We need to get off this mountain before winter sets in for the sake of our horses. It is a two bedroom home (one is tiny) with one bathroom. My husband and I have a hard time to get along with one bathroom, which is funny because… I grew up in a big Berliner apartment in Germany right after the war. At that time all fame and fortune was lost and my family was trying to make ends meet by renting out rooms in our apartment. We had three or four renters, plus my family of four - and just one bathroom. There was actually a second bathroom, but nobody saw any need for a second one, so it was used as a storage room! We came a long way being spoiled since then, LOL. At any rate there is a nice porch, a gas stove for ambiance or backup heat and a two car detached garage. We are at the south end of town, two blocks from the park at Rock Creek, 10 minutes from the ski runs and six blocks from downtown. To find out what to do in Red Lodge, check out the activity calendar. In December you don't want to miss the Christmas Stroll. All stores are open for long hours serving cookies and hot cider with vendors lining the middle of Broadway.

We live in the original commercial district of Red Lodge, therefore our home built in 1900 sits right along the sidewalk and along the southern edge of the property line. Which is nice, nobody can ever block the view of the aspen and Mount Maurice to the south since a new residence next door would have to have the residential setback, besides, there is already a house there, but it sits in the alley. The original commercial building probably burnt down as most of old downtown did many times over at the beginning of the last century until the city fathers had the brilliant idea to build all new commercial buildings in brick. So they started the "new" downtown with all brick buildings along Broadway where it is now and rezoned our district to "Residential" - except for the old grocery store two blocks toward the middle school, which is now a health food store and restaurant with their own organic garden and solar panels for power. I do have a website for our home, but the outside photos are not updated yet since we replaced the windows and painted it a brighter color. Also the hedge is gone and the railings are replaced with wagon wheels. All remodeling should be completed by November 15th.

But what would actually be a better deal is a house with a contract for deed - such as the brand new home in Shepherd, only 15 minutes from Billings on 20 acres for just $230,000 - $15,000 down, 4% interest; 30 year amortization with a balloon payment after 20 years, payments would be $1,030 per month. There you have three bedrooms, two baths and a well that gives you 10 gallons a minute. No garage though, but the weather in those parts won't give you much trouble. Actually the weather in Montana is great, the summers are mild and so are the winters except at high elevations of course.

Solar and wind power is not only getting cheaper to install but also more and more efficient, which is nice because it lets you to escape to just about anywhere. There are even wind mills that can pump water from over a 1,000ft below!

This would be a good route to take if you want to build on the 203 acres for $295,000 west of Joliet the 42 acres in Luther $325,000 - (21 acres for $175K/195K) or the 160 acres in Dawson County for $110,000

The only price reduction I have for this month is the 2 bedroom/1 bath home in the Stillwater Canyon near Nye/Beehive. It is now listed for $285,000 - down from $325,000

A happy life is just a string of happy moments. But most people don't allow the happy moment, because they're so busy trying to get a happy life.

Have you ever wondered what our ancestors did without refrigeration? How were they able to prevent their food from spoiling? Some of our ancient civilizations did in fact have refrigeration and used simple items they had on hand to create it. For example clay pot refrigeration keeps food cold without electricity by using evaporative cooling. It is basically a big porous earthenware pot with a smaller pot inside and a layer of wet sand in between the two. The inner pot can be glazed, so the water doesn't get inside where you want to store your food. The evaporation of the outer liquid draws heat from the inner pot. Keep a wet towel over the top if you don't have a lid.

In a short or long-term disaster where power is out, knowing essential skills on how to prevent foods or medication from spoiling will be a big help. You could also build a root cellar out of sandbags, a bit of plaster and sod. I couldn't find the reference explaining the process but I posted the photos someone sent me on my website, it looks like a very simple way of building an eight foot diameter storage room. It could also be used as a fallout shelter, play house or a place to keep all the stray cats from around the neighborhood, just add a cat door :-) We actually did install a cat door in our garden shed and stocked it with soft sleeping places, water, food, toys and catnip for furry wanderers. We have to keep it locked down at night though; otherwise the raccoons are having a field day. We haven't seen a mouse or mole in years…

That reminds me, when I cured the cat bites on my hand, I mixed DMSO with the activated MMS. When I used that immediately for the second cat bite it healed a lot quicker than the first cat bite for which I went to the emergency room to get antibiotics and waited half a day until my hand turned black to use it. You might want to have some in your medicine cabinet along with the MMS, it doesn't spoil. DMSO is made from tree bark and can be used for a multitude of things, from saving yourself from paralysis after a stroke by orally ingesting every 15 minutes to break up the clot, to sinus infections (nose dropper of DMSO). It also works for high eye pressure (drop it in your eye), swollen ankles due to a sprain (will take down swelling within 5 minutes) shoulder pains, joint problems and much more. The book "Nature's Healer" has over 300 pages of the uses of DMSO. The DMSO touted in the link is pure enough for internal use, if you just want to use it on a sprain and such, you can get a lower grade at any feed store, since it is widely used in livestock care as well. Jim Humble's MMS can be bought all over the place on the Internet. Just mix 3 drops with lemon juice, let sit 3 minutes, add a little water and down the hatch, work yourself up to 15drops if you are sick. Or mix with DMSO for external uses. There is also a yahoo group discussing MMS and DMSO

Stay happy, healthy and creative until my next newsletter on Halloween!

:-)
Best Regards,

Dorothea Lowe, Broker
